Baggage Policy

Overview

Peru Railways allows passengers to bring personal luggage onboard free of charge within reasonable limits depending on the train service. Because trains to Machu Picchu operate on narrow mountain railways with limited storage space, passengers are encouraged to travel with compact luggage only.

Most Machu Picchu trains do not provide a separate checked baggage service. All luggage must travel with the passenger inside the carriage. For safety and convenience, passengers must keep their belongings under supervision during the journey.

Hand Luggage (Carry-On)

Passenger coaches are equipped with overhead racks and small luggage spaces suitable for backpacks, handbags, and small suitcases. Luggage must be placed securely and should never block aisles, doors, or emergency exits.

Due to limited space on the train, travelers are strongly encouraged to bring only essential items for the journey to Machu Picchu.

Free Luggage Allowance

Peru Rail generally limits luggage to manageable carry-on bags suitable for onboard storage. The following allowances are commonly accepted for passenger comfort:

Passengers traveling with larger suitcases are usually advised to store them at hotels in Cusco or Ollantaytambo and bring only a small overnight bag for the train journey.

Large and Oversized Items

Large suitcases, bulky luggage, or oversized items are generally not permitted onboard Machu Picchu trains due to limited storage capacity.

If passengers need to travel with larger baggage, they should:

• Arrange luggage storage at their hotel or station facilities before departure
• Carry only a small bag with essential items for the trip
